hmm... i cant decide which one i like more. I like the vertical text on the first layout, but i think that overall the second one is more organized and looks better to me.. oh wait i looked again and now im not sure. I like how you have the information organized on the second layout, but maybe it would look better on the left side like it is in the first one. and then add some vertical text to it.
I really like the first 1 compared to the 2nd one. I think with the vertical text it will allow you to expand more on what is visible to the user incase their is more of something for certain students.
What I would like to see is how you would move from this screen to the student selection screen and then back in again. This element I feel is an important part of our interfaces and should be included within.
Look at other students thoughts and ideas on this particular point and see how they can be integrated into your design or even how you can improve on their ideas to work best for yours'.
I think that both designs have potential but need to incorporate more content to show how the design would work in more complicated situations.
I think you have a nice eye for the type and how you are organizing the information. I am drawn the the white design primarily because it does a good job at putting all the information in close proximity to the rest of the information...and that is always a good idea interface design.
On another note...I think the two pics of the person on top of each other might be a bit of overkill...what else could be in the background there.

Hey Kris, I like how clean your designs are for the most part, they show a large amount of information without cluttering the page. My biggest criticism would be that the background image needs to be reduced so it doesn't take away from the foreground.
looking at both of your layouts together, i like the first one's color but the second one's actual layout. the darker background color makes your colors pop (also, more guy-friendly than pastels), but is too centralized. the pastel one lines up your body and face a lot less contrived, but it looks nicer since they fall into place together. also, the larger face photo could probably be blurred more instead of filtered, so it doesn't create some strange color blocks on your face. the second one also gives you more writing room, so that one may be your best bet! but bring in the dark side to bring out all your features, yep!
Kristen, I actually like your first design the best. I wonder if it would look good with the upper left hand corner empty. I'm not sure where you would display the information but I think that some empty space would make your design even stronger. Not to contradict Adream, but I like the second image in the background. Maybe you could lighten its opacity to put more emphasis on the main picture. Overall I'd say its pretty good. I'm curious to see what the main page would look like.
I do enjoy the vertical type, I am just a big fan. I would try working your lighter color palette into the first layout. But I do like how the information is displayed in the second layout. Having the core info at the top makes more sense than at the bottom. I would also like to see the screen in which I would select which student. one final note, I'm diggin those boots.
I'm very much into the dark layout... both are visually interesting, with the very large element of the headshot, and the smaller element of the whole body. The darker layout really makes the "character" pop out. Also, the horizontal elements that contain your "health" type items (water, gum) are quite lovely and really add to the video game interface feel.
My only little nit-picky comment is that the font is kind of scripty for my taste, but I think it looks pretty lovely overall.
